FAQs

An AQA is essential to evaluate the potential impacts of your development on local air quality and human health, ensuring compliance with air quality standards. If your project is located near sensitive areas like an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA), it’s likely an assessment will be required to avoid air pollution risks.

We assess pollutants like Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), which are regulated due to their impact on health. These pollutants are commonly associated with traffic, industrial processes, and construction activities.

An AQA may be required if your development:
  • Increases traffic flows by more than 100 Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) within an AQMA.
  • Introduces large energy combustion sources (e.g., boilers or CHP units).
  • Introduces new receptors (like homes or schools) in areas of poor air quality.
We use dispersion models to predict how pollutants from your development will disperse in the surrounding area. This helps identify whether pollutant concentrations will exceed air quality standards at sensitive locations, such as residential properties.
If the assessment shows exceedances of air quality objectives, we will recommend mitigation measures. These could include redesigning the layout, reducing emissions from traffic, or implementing green infrastructure to improve pollutant dispersion.
Yes, but it’s crucial to ensure the development is consistent with the local Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP). This may involve adopting strategies to reduce emissions, such as installing low-emission boilers or incorporating electric vehicle charging points.
This depends on the site-to-site and local authority policies. We always communicate with clients before issuing an Air Quality Assessment.
Exposure to high levels of pollutants like NO2 and PM can lead to respiratory problems, aggravate asthma, and increase the risk of heart and lung diseases. Protecting air quality is crucial, especially for vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.
Several factors determine the need for an AQA, including the scale of the development, proximity to sensitive areas (like schools or hospitals), and whether your site lies within or near an AQMA.
Good planning can help minimise emissions by locating developments away from pollution hotspots, promoting sustainable transport, and requiring emission-reducing technologies. This helps ensure developments contribute positively to local air quality.
